Medicare and Medigap help in San Diego, California
San Diego has one of the largest military and veteran communities in the country, so many people turning 65 are coordinating Medicare with TRICARE For Life or VA care. Residents of North County, East County and the South Bay can also see different Advantage service areas and networks. We help San Diegans compare Medicare and Medigap choices by phone or video.
TRICARE For Life and VA coordination
Military retirees who are entitled to Part A generally must enroll in Part B to keep TRICARE For Life. VA health care is separate from Medicare, and many veterans use both. Review these rules before declining or delaying Part B.
Cross-border and regional travel
If you regularly spend time in Mexico or elsewhere, remember that Original Medicare generally does not cover care outside the U.S. Some Medigap plans include limited foreign travel emergency coverage.
Medicare Supplement (Medigap) in San Diego
California's birthday rule lets current Medigap policyholders switch to equal or lesser benefits each year in a window starting on their birthday, without health questions. New enrollees get the federal six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period once they are 65 and in Part B.
Medicare Advantage and Part D in San Diego County
Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are offered by county service area, so options in San Diego can differ from neighboring counties. The 2027 Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7, 2026; your Initial Enrollment Period around age 65 is separate.
Help with costs
If your income and resources are limited, Medi-Cal, Medicare Savings Programs or Extra Help with Part D may apply. Eligibility is decided by the state or Social Security, not by an agent.
