Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans in Florida

A Medicare Supplement policy helps cover costs Original Medicare leaves behind and works with any provider nationwide that accepts Medicare, which is why many Florida snowbirds consider one. Plans with the same letter have the same basic benefits with every company, but prices and pricing methods differ. This guide explains the rules; it does not quote prices.

Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period

Federal rules give you six months of Medigap open enrollment starting the month you are 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. During it, companies cannot deny you or charge more because of your health. Outside it, companies can generally use medical underwriting unless a guaranteed-issue right applies.

Why travelers look at Medigap

Because Original Medicare covers providers nationwide who accept Medicare, a supplement can fit people who split time between Florida and another state. Some plan letters also include limited foreign travel emergency coverage.

  • No network restrictions with Original Medicare providers
  • Does not include prescription coverage; add Part D
  • Cannot be used with Medicare Advantage
  • Compare how each company sets and raises its rates

Under 65 with Medicare

Florida has rules for people under 65 who have Medicare because of a disability, but options and pricing can differ from those for people 65 and older. Ask how current Florida rules apply to you.

Leaving Medicare Advantage

If you leave a Medicare Advantage plan for Original Medicare, you may need to answer health questions to buy Medigap unless a trial right or other guaranteed-issue right applies.

Questions to ask before you choose

  • Am I still in my six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period?
  • Do I travel enough that nationwide access matters to me?
  • How has this company priced and raised rates over time?
  • Which Part D plan works with my prescriptions?

Frequently asked questions

  • Does Medigap work outside Florida? Yes. Medigap works with Original Medicare, which covers providers across the U.S. who accept Medicare.
  • Can a company turn me down for Medigap in Florida? During your Medigap Open Enrollment Period or with a guaranteed-issue right, generally no. At other times, companies can generally review your health history.
