Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans in Pennsylvania

A Medicare Supplement policy helps pay costs Original Medicare leaves behind and works with any provider nationwide that accepts Medicare. In Pennsylvania, plans with the same letter have the same basic benefits with every company, while prices, pricing methods and rate histories differ. This guide explains the rules; it does not quote prices.

Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period

Federal rules give you six months of Medigap open enrollment starting the month you are 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. During it, companies cannot deny you or charge more because of your health. Afterwards, they can generally use medical underwriting unless a guaranteed-issue right applies.

How companies set prices

Medigap policies can be priced by your age at purchase, your current age, or the same for everyone regardless of age. The method affects how your premium may change over time.

  • Issue-age rated: based on your age when you buy
  • Attained-age rated: rises as you get older
  • Community rated: generally the same regardless of age
  • Ask which method a company uses before you compare

Pairing Medigap with Part D and PACE

Medigap does not include outpatient prescription coverage. Most people add a Part D plan, and eligible Pennsylvanians may also use PACE or PACENET for extra help.

Switching later

Outside open enrollment and guaranteed-issue situations, switching Medigap policies may require health questions. Confirm current Pennsylvania rules with the Pennsylvania Insurance Department.

Questions to ask before you choose

  • Am I still in my six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period?
  • Which pricing method does each company use?
  • Which Part D plan works with my prescriptions, and do I qualify for PACE?
  • Do I travel enough that nationwide access matters?

Frequently asked questions

  • Does Pennsylvania have a Medigap birthday rule? Rules can change, so confirm with the Pennsylvania Insurance Department. Federal guaranteed-issue rights and your Medigap Open Enrollment Period apply in every state.
  • Is Medigap the same as Medicare Advantage? No. Medigap supplements Original Medicare. Medicare Advantage replaces how you receive Parts A and B, and the two cannot be used together.

Important notice
